FAST
first to launch TBM
On April 30, 2015, HRH Prince Faisal bin Bandar, Governor of Riyadh, started
the first of two FAST Consortium tunnel boring machines (TBM) which will be
used on the Riyadh Metro Line 5 (Green). This TBM is also the first of seven
that will eventually be put into service constructing the entire Riyadh Metro
system.
The TBM, named Dhafrah, started boring on the 12.9km tunnel between Riyadh
Airbase and King Abdul Aziz Historical Centre. The Green Line features eleven
stations and two endpoint transfer stations with Line 1 (Blue) and Line 2
(Red). FAST Consortium also has responsibility for the Line 4 (Yellow) and Line
6 (Purple). When the entire metro system is complete in 2018, it will contain
176 km of track and 85 stations.
Dhafrah, meaning “Victory” in Arabic, was named through a public competition
that drew thousands of entries. The TBM is expected to drill at an average rate
of 90 meters per week, installing precast concrete segments as rings which form
the tunnel lining as it moves forward. The TBM itself is has a diameter of
almost ten meters – the equivalent to a three floor building – and the length
of a football pitch.
FAST will use two Tunnel Boring Machines (TBM) of the Earth Pressure Balance
(EPB) type. The second FAST TBM, named Sanaa, meaning “beautiful” in Arabic, is
expected to start excavation before the end of June 2015.
